AI SEO: What It Actually Means and How to Get Ready For It

“AI SEO” gets used to mean several different things, which is part of why it causes confusion. Used properly, it describes the practice of making a website easy for AI systems, not only classic search engines, to find, understand and recommend. That includes the large language models behind ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, and the AI summaries that now sit above traditional results in Google itself.

It builds on SEO, rather than replacing it

Everything that has always mattered for search, such as a fast site, clear structure, genuine expertise and other sites linking to yours, still matters for AI systems. They are trained on the same web, and they still favour sources that are well organised and broadly trusted. A business with weak fundamentals will not fix that with an “AI SEO” label. It has to fix the fundamentals first.

Where AI search genuinely changes the job

The difference shows up in format and structure. An AI system tends to summarise the first clear, well-supported answer it finds on a page, rather than the whole page. That rewards content that states its answer plainly near the top, backed by evidence, rather than content that makes a reader scroll through an introduction to reach the point. Structured data, particularly FAQ and how-to markup, also does double duty: it earns rich results in classic search and helps an AI system understand what a page is actually claiming.

Where to start

Audit your most commercially important pages against one question: if someone asked an AI assistant the query this page targets, could it lift a correct, well-supported answer from this page in one paragraph? If not, the content usually needs restructuring rather than rewriting from scratch. We cover this in detail as part of our performance marketing and AI search work, alongside the traditional SEO and paid channels most businesses still rely on for the bulk of their traffic.

Same direction. A bigger tomorrow.
