Marketing strategy and brand positioning for growing businesses

Most marketing problems begin before the first advert is written. The business has not decided who it is for, what it should be known for, or which customers are worth the cost of winning. Strategy and positioning is the research and thinking underneath every campaign, website and sales conversation that follows.

Market and audience research

We speak to customers, and to the people who nearly became customers. We study search demand, competitor advertising, reviews and pricing. The research does not stop when the report is delivered. We keep testing it against what your campaigns tell us, and we revise the plan when the evidence changes.

Brand positioning

We decide what you want to be known for and write it in words a new member of staff could repeat. That covers your audience, the problem you solve, the reasons people should believe you, and how you sound. When customers compare you on price, it usually means the brand has not made its value clear. Positioning is how that gets fixed, without reaching for a discount.

Go-to-market strategy

A plan for launching a product, entering a city or opening a new channel. It states which customer group comes first, which channels to use, what to offer, what to spend, and what you will measure in the first ninety days.

Growth roadmap

A sequenced plan for the next six to twelve months. Every item has an owner, a cost estimate and the number it is meant to move. We rank the items by likely return, so your first quarter has a short list of things to do, not fifty ideas.

Fractional CMO: senior marketing leadership on demand

Not every business needs a full-time chief marketing officer, but every ambitious business needs senior marketing leadership. Our fractional CMO model gives founders and leadership teams experienced strategic direction without the cost and commitment of a full-time executive. We work with you to define growth strategy, go-to-market strategy, marketing roadmaps, brand positioning, demand generation, marketing team structure, performance and revenue metrics, and how to adopt AI in your marketing. The engagement is built around your growth stage: heavier at a launch or a turning point, lighter once the plan is running well.

Strategy that changes the job marketing is asked to do

Some of our most useful work has not been about spending more. For a new jewellery brand, customers were saying no to the price, not the product. Rather than offer a discount, we changed what the marketing was asked to do: put the founder’s story at the centre and build familiarity before asking for a purchase. Strategy is often that: finding the real constraint, then changing the job.

We set out the positioning, the plan and the priorities, and talk them through until they are clear.

  4. 04

Questions

Questions about strategy & positioning

Do we need a strategy before we run advertising?

Not always, but it helps. If you already know your customer and your offer works, we can start with campaigns and refine as we learn. If you are unsure who to target or what to say, a few weeks of research usually saves more money than it costs.

What is brand positioning?

It is the specific place your business holds in a customer’s mind: who you are for, what you do better or differently, and why they should believe you. Good positioning makes every advert, web page and sales conversation easier to write.

What is a fractional CMO?

A senior marketing leader who works with your business part-time, on demand. You get the strategy, priorities and team direction of a chief marketing officer without the cost of a full-time hire.

Who does the work?

The people you meet are the people doing the research and writing the plan. You work directly with them throughout.
